Șumuleu-Ciuc – Where Transylvania’s heart beat.

The pilgrimage character dates from the fifteenth century of Şumuleu. The Christians from Szeklers Land in holidays came to worship to the Virgin Mary. The pilgrimage of Pentecost is since 1567. At the beginning the Catholic parishioners came from around Gheorgheni, Ciuc and Casin, but then also from Three Chairs, Odorhei, Mures and from Moldova the Csangos, too.

Şumuleu-Ciuc is a famous place of pilgrimage for Catholic Szeklers. All parishioners since arriving in this place come to pray and worship the Virgin Maria. In nowadays from many other religions, Christians join and participate in pilgrimages.

The Mountain Şumuleu Mic is considered a holy place as parishioners are praying here from centuries. At the top there is the Salvator chapel (XV). On the mountain Şumuleul Great once stood Salt Castle. It is assumed that the salt was stored in this place which where brought from Moldova. The location between the Small and Great Şumuleu mountains is called the saddle, named after its shape. Since 1990, the number of pilgrims multiplied in such an extent that it was decided to build an altar and hold Mass at this place.
